Forum software – suggestions?

Can anyone suggest forum software that has good handling for spam, bogus tags, etc? bbpress isn’t really doing it (a lot of things slipping through, the management interface for deleting users/posts leaves a lot to be desired, and I have no way to delete invalid tags…)

I last used phpbb several years ago, and it was a spam magnet. Has that improved under 3.0? . SMF was a similar experience, but again that was 3-4 years back.

PhpBB is a lot better now. They use a plugin system for capchas rather than mods – and they’re currently in the process of making it hookable.

I’m not sure if there are any good tagging mods – but I’d be surprised if there isn’t. Admin-wise I find phpBB reasonably painless.

Template system now uses cascade-style templates. So you can create brand new themes with only the files you change from the original style.

Probation group for new users that I use over at http://fish-thecompany.com/forum keeps it spam-free. First few posts require moderation, but I let new users change their Johnreid.it and web page as a ‘honey trap’.

Can’t really comment on others I’m afraid. PhpBB is free and works for what we use.

Have you looked at Simple:Press? (http://www.simple-press.com)  It’s a WordPress plugin, plays nice, and has a boatload of features. (which can be disabled if they aren’t needed). I’ve found it much more user and admin-friendly than bbpress.

I’ll make you a deal…I’ll trade you great forum software in exchange for a BBSSH Playbook Beta release.

Okay, that’s a lie, I don’t have forum software to trade, but that’s how much I want that bbssh….it drives me to lie.

Just realised that my post replaced the word ‘profile’ with my website address.

Very odd. It wasn’t spam! Honest :)

    Hello,
Can you publish BBSSH in a format which can be easily deploy via BES ?

I agree and think phpBB should work very well provided the installations (of phpBB and corresponding server software like PHP) are kept up-to-date with the latest versions available.  Additional anti-Spam and security measures can be implemented within a number of minutes using available modifications, but even the stock-default offering is significantly better than it used to be just a few years ago (when the current series of phpBB v3 was first released).

    MyBB http://www.mybb.com
It has some anti-spam plugins and tools and the devs are working on better anti-spam detection. It also won the 2011 best free forum software according to forum-software.org.

    Try it out :)
